Re: Electric Vehicles - Information & Updates
I know the technology will improve in time. I'm not there yet for getting one.
I'm sure each one is different, but my coworker is not impressed with his. He was listed as someone to take place in a pilot program with our company. We all have fleet vehicles, and right now, everyone is a hybrid vehicle. My coworker lives in the CT area, and he agrees our company isn't ready for everyone to have an EV yet. At least in my division, our territories are very large. Mine is considered small, and I cover most of Michigan. He said the fleet EV he has mentions to not do back to back quick charges. Which those still take 30 minutes to charge. Something about it damaging the battery quicker. He says he's been spending about 45 minutes extra a day plotting out where to go for charging his car. Then add in limited ability for quick charges, and he can't quit travel the long distances he used to do on a daily basis. Then adjusting any hotels that may not have chargers.
I loved the idea of us having an EV for our fleet vehicles. But it's not there, yet. At least not for what I do, and the distances we travel. I look forward to this improving though.

Re: Electric Vehicles - Information & Updates
After the recent NYC fire that was caused by E-bike batteries, I’m expecting to see state regulations in the next 12 months.
From what I was told by people I know at REI and folks a couple of reputable bike shops that have been in business for 2+ decades, like regular bikes it’s all about the quality of components and right now the quality of the batteries is all over the place regardless of price of the e-bikes.
I don’t blame Mackinac Island officials from trying to keep e-bikes off the island given the lack of quality control with batteries and charging components..

I haven't ridden a motorcycle in probably 42-43 years. I had a cousin who had a few dirt bikes and we'd ride them through the woods tempting death (though we were too young/stupid to know it).Motown Spartan wrote:Robert J Sakimano wrote:

When we got married, my wife made me a deal. I could have pretty much whatever I wanted on four wheels if I promised not to get a motorcycle. She wasn't wrong to do this. I would die on such a thing. It's worked out quite well for me, really.

I used to ride and will ride again if things work out.
However, unlike some riders I was always super aware of the dangers, always rode totally defensively, assuming everyone was out to kill me, and refocusing my reactions every spring by a detailed refresher of all the safety rules for defensive driving on a bike.

To be fair to Big Gretch it sounds like this may be quite a few years off from economical deployment.

I have my brother's Bolt EUV for the weekend. He borrowed my SUV for a trip up north. I could live with the Bolt as my second car. Fairly comfortable. Used it for weekend errands. It was at about 80% when it was dropped off. Maybe 100 miles of running around has taken it down to 30%. He's going to pick it back up on Tuesday. Will start charging it up on my 120 tonight.

Charging on 120 will take awhile and nothing else should be using the same circuit at the same time.

so our "go to" Meijer (Lake Lansing Road in EL) has some electric charging stations on the west side of their property by the green house/nursery, etc.
generally speaking, are those open to anyone who drives an electric car (or bike? not sure how it works)?
like, if you live nearby, can you plug your car in there and just kinda walk home? Is there a fee? I would suspect so, right?
Inquiring minds wanna know.

Interested to see how MI adjusts its road tax funding for electrics and even hybrids.
Suspect it will be an annual fee tacked on to registration a surcharge at charging stations like the current pump tax rather than tolls.

Next generation of EV powertrain technology will reduce weight, increase vehicle performance, reduce charging times and improve miles per kW.
In the TL:DR section of the post my comment is that higher votages for the same amount of kW has lower IR losses and thus is physically more efficient, which is why high power transmission is done at very high voltage. Power is also a squared function for I so doubling the voltage drops the power losses by a factor of 4.

“Bosch is upping the voltage in electromobility. Our 800-volt technology is the next step toward more powerful electrical powertrains and shorter recharging times,” said Ralf Schmid, the divisional board member responsible for electrification in the Bosch Powertrain Solutions division.
