As for the Canadian wildfires, I believe the only root causes they have determined so far would be "lightning." But if I missed a /s feel free to let me know.
Dry conditions caused by global warming, you know that.
Oh, I get it. So ICE vehicles are guilty by like fourth cousin. Clever. Although I think that means ICE vehicles and lightning can still marry.

Charging and distance will get better, and economy of scale will make them cheaper... then we will all get them. Not sure the point of arguing about this.

Every 150 miles they need to charge for somewhere between 20-35 minutes - and they have to avoid charging during peak hours to reduce any delays to their "adventures."
So my travels from the Great Lakes to the Rocky Mountains would require between 9-10 stops, for a best case scenario of THREE HOURS.
With the family hauler SUV, I can stop every 500 miles for somewhere around 5-10 minutes, and travel whenever the hell I want. So a worst case scenario is that I'd stop for 30 minutes.
Yeah, no thanks on the EV.
How often are you driving from the Great Lakes to the Rocky Mountains?
And does your family only have 1 car?

I probably do that 8-10 times a year.
I have (too) many cars.

Will be a few years before I buy an EV, because I don't buy new cars, but have loved the few rentals I've had over the last couple months. The instant torque is fucking awesome. Even on the slower little shit box (Had a Bolt once) ones.

There are a couple of "next big things" in development for EV's.
Solid State Batteries are going to almost double the kW per pound & automakers are making the choice to either reduce weight (and their costs) or offer supper ranges into the more that 500 miles (some are nearing 1k miles), Toyota seems to being going to that.
Switching from 400-volt electric systems to 900-volt electric systems which reduces vehicle weight & decreases charging times. (If someone decided to go higher, say 1200-volt; 1500-volt; or 1800-volt systems people will be kicking themselves over how long it takes to fill an ICE gas tank)
(A third "big thing" is the push to improve the efficiency of all the systems on vehicle. Passenger compartment heating is switching from resistive heaters to heat pump heaters because of this)
EV tech is still very much on the "moore" development curve and will be for a number of years or even longer.
Also, as Tesla has shown, an EV production line for EV's designed from a "fresh sheet of paper" will reduce production time, and thus costs, big time. The CEO of Ford admitted this during his latest shareholders call as did the CEO of GM. Tesla is already using its lower production costs to pressure the market, but the others will catch up quickly, as this isn't rocket science.

If you're thinking of buying an electric vehicle (EV), you probably should consider installing a home charger too.

Headline is slightly misleading. You can still get an ICE in these states, but it must be special ordered. No dealer inventory vehicles.

That is an interesting situation. How did some car companies manage to be measured differently, do you suppose?

No idea. CARB is utter bullshit, so it's not surprising there is a carve out for favorites, if that is, indeed, what that is.

Those states west of the mountains have more trapped emissions, so CARB makes sense for them, not so further east, where using CARB is just somewhat being lazy and somewhat at the request of the auto manufacturers who don't want 50 standards to meet.

Weed killer is expensive. Just use used motor oil. Two birds - one fire.

Aren't you suppose to use the motor oil to set the tires on fire?

Exactly. Everybody knows motor oil is best used with tires. It works well with styrofoam and electronics, too.

My former neighbors used to use it as weed killer so I guess it is multi purpose.

I was in the middle of a 45 mile ride when I saw what I think was the e-bike. Since I've realized that it's a 'thing', I'm on the look out for them more.
but, yes.. a decent bike ride, some yard/garden work, then a good nap.
(trying to get in as many naps as possible before our failure of a child moves back in with us).

question..
so I was on a ride this morning and a couple of miles of it is on a paved path leading from East Lansing out to Okemos. I noticed a sign (I'm sure I've seen it a hundreds of times, but this morning I actually read it) that said "No Motorized Vehicles".
would that include these e-bike things?
seems like it would, but I don't know.

In Michigan, some are and some are not. Depends on the classification of the bike.

It depends. There are 3 different classifications of ebikes, and local laws all deal with them differently, sometimes even on different trails. It's really kind of a messy situation.
There's a trail out near me where it crosses two different counties and a piece of national forest. That's three separate sets of laws on one ride. It's almost as complicated as guns!

Gallagher said following the talks with Ford and GM, he remains concerned with the high level of reliance on Chinese manufacturing already in place in the automotive industry.
https://michiganadvance.com/2023/06/20/u-s-lawmakers-talk-chinese-automotive-industry-competition-with-ford-and-gm/
The big transfer of suppliers to China happened from 2000 to 2008. File this Congressional concern as being 20 years too late. However, having plants built in the US for Chinese companies is a win for the US. What are these Congresspeople smoking?

so my friend and I were drinking beer the other night before the Isbell show and a guy walked by pushing what appeared to be an e-bike.
I asked my buddy if he knew anything about them (he's a fairly bright guy.. much brighter than I am) and he talked about how they can catch fire if if plugged in (not sure if that's the right word) to the wrong sort of station?
that would suck.
