Trump lied a lot more than 17 times.  They must be ignoring the countless outrageous opinions be spouted throughout.  When someone says "I will end the war before the inauguration" that's essentially a lie.  While technically not a lie yet, it's outrageous enough to be taken as one.  He said crap like that at least a hundred times.

Refusing to say he wouldn't sign a national abortion ban also is not going to play well.

I think that Ford avoided that, but Reagan's challenge of Ford in 1976 caused Ford to lose.

Reagan leaned into the wink wink nod nod racial messaging and won, cementing this as the Republican election method.

GHW Bush did the same, though at the time he said he thought it was an election gimmick.

By that time all the younger Republicans had absorbed the message and that was what the Republicans did, covertly stirred up divisions in the voters instead of trying for the "big tent".

Trump turned the "covert" off and blasted it out overtly, after the election of Obama enraged the white racists who, with the help of Republican big money, took over the Tea Party, which started out as an economic protest over the big banks being made whole when the homeowners weren't.

The internet communication help band various groups together, thus it was an enabling factor.

So that, IMO, is how we got here, however I am always open to other opinions on things.

I agree, the internet has enabled disparate normally separated small groups of like minded individuals to band together like groups would do regionally in the past. Essentially, it made the world smaller and gave power to the disillusioned and normally ostracized groups of society. It cuts both ways, of course, as the small radical groups of Dems can do the same thing technically but only the right wing side has managed to go completely mainstream.

It was very effective. A few clips doesn't convey that as strongly though.  Let's hope the undecided people were paying attention through the whole thing. Or at least half way through the second half.

I saw a tweet and went down the rabbit hole on the Haitian thing. Took all of about 5 minutes to unravel. Maybe some of y'all know this but I'm gonna recap. The town of Springfield, OH has an influx of 13-15k Haitian immigrants living there. Not sure why they chose that location, but apparently there was a need for workers and the Haitians are fulfilling it. Most of them are in the country legally on something called parole status. In August, a Haitian without a valid license hit a school bus with his minivan, and tragically an 11 year old boy died. You can see the opportunity right there and sure enough they pounced on it, and have been creating rumors about the Haitians since then. There was an incident in Canton, which is not particularly close, in August where a black woman (not sure if Haitian) was indeed arrested for killing and eating a cat in front of people. There is video of the arrest and people on the Internet have been using it as "proof" that the Springfield city officials are lying. BTW the Police department itself has debunked the claims, and I'm probably stereotyping a bit here, but I'm thinking that a PD in Ohio is probably on the conservative side and wouldn't mind leaning into these rumors if they were at all factual. They said there have been no credible reports of this happening in their town. Oh and also the Father of the boy who passed away has been begging publicly for the right to stop using his son's tragic passing as a springboard to hate the Haitians. This has been my TED talk.

There's now a huge online push to connect Harris with trump by the fact that very little policy was discussed.  Essentially the reoccurrence of the "both sides are equally bad" argument.  This is an obvious disinformation and voter suppression push similar to how trump and Russian online trolls pretended to be black in an effort to communicate to the black community that they shouldn't vote.  We are getting in real psy ops warfare scenarios here in our elections. I think we have this to look forward to on every future election moving forward, a literal information war on our turf every 4 years, perhaps every 2. Truthfully I think that favors whoever is challenging because they can more easily fuel people that are disgruntled by existing leadership and the fact that if active government was connected with such a campaign, it would be pretty big news so the challenger has a much longer leash and can have more overt connection to the disinfo campaign without consequences
