Hurricane Ian
Hopefully this is a short thread, but this thing has the potential to become a monster, especially if it stalls out in the gulf.

Stay safe folks.
Old friends have a place in Hernando Beach north of Tampa. At one point center of Hurricane Charley's cone path was predicted to be a hundred yards from their house, before it turned inland and hit around Ft. Myers. Center of Ian looks headed toward Hernando Beach. Rarely go on FB but will to see how they're doing.

The track has moved West more, and the center of the cone now has it hitting in the bend of Florida, south of Tallahassee. The good news is that is really sparsely populated, as the coast is very swampy there. So things are looking a lot better for Tampa (and Hernando) at this point.

I love doing google maps searches. Crazy how swampy the “armpit”. Like no beaches at all…

I hope this doesn't become one of those 'What if' disasters. I think a Cat 3 going into Tampa could become a huge disaster.

Heat, Miami and myself should be fine, Miami and S. Florida is effectively out of the cone, the lower Keys have watches, but shouldn't be hit either. This is heading up towards Tampa.DWags wrote:Take care guys. When is this supposed to hit?

I see they have ordered mandatory evacuations for parts of Florida. From the state that was ground zero in fighting Covid mandates. Governor DeathSentence the hypocrite.

So, mandatory evacuations just means, we're not coming to save your dumb ass when you call 911 an hour into the storm. This is mostly the barrier islands that get these type of orders. Siesta Key and Anna Maria will most likely become a part of the Gulf of Mexico temporarily.PennSpartan wrote:I see they have ordered mandatory evacuations for parts of Florida. I do agree with your premise though and do think that maybe some that don't like global climate change should stay home and ride this hoax out.

If I remember, always a bad way to start, you are inland, not on the coast.
Clearly hoping you all come through this okay.

Re: Hurricane Ian
We aren't really under a threat for much that is all that serious. Parts of South Florida will get flooding, but that happens in some areas with a few sprinkles. The next few days will have king tides, which flood some low lying areas near the water even without rain. So a few inches will add to the wetness (that's what she said!). Nothing like Tampa, though. They'll have king tides, tons of rain, and several feet of storm surge.Trapper Gus wrote:InTenSity wrote:

Looks like track has changed some, Sarasota and Anna Maria Island now in the center of the track. My wife has a bunch of siblings in the track now in that area. They were putting plywood over their windows yesterday getting ready. Another friend has a son that just bought a house on Anna Maria Island, hopefully he didn't buy it a year too soon.

Latest track shows it going right over SIL house. I think tracks get updated at 11 and 5, at least where I get my info

So, she and her cat are gone somewhere safe now?
Does she put up plywood over the windows in this situation?

Tracks should be updated every 3 hours now. Once it's a that to the US. Hurricane hunters should be out there after it leaves Cuba.

No she didn't, she's not physically able to anyway. She's going to her daughter's house more inland, they're not putting anything up over their windows either. They might start questioning their thinking if it gets as bad as NWS is saying it's going to be. My other in-laws started preparing yesterday, they're the smarter ones of the bunch.

Maybe something as simple as duct taping the glass to limit shattering?

She lives on 3rd Street, track is to the left. There might not be anything to come back to if it holds.

Shit is going to be really bad for the Ft Myers area.
155mph winds now. A Cat 5 starts at 157.
Predictions for storm surge now up to 16 feet. All those homes built on stilts, or with just garages on the first floor, their living spaces could still get swamped.

I was watching one of the stations and they were reporting that most people have decided to stay home rather than evacuate. So after this storm there are going to be a lot of stories of people who wish they wouldn't have stayed behind and should have evacuated.Floyd Robertson wrote:My Dad sold his condo on Charlotte harbor in July, hope everyone there heeds the warnings and stays safe.

I don’t understand why people do this. Maybe it’s because I live in Michigan. But if I had several days notice that a tornado was going to be in my area on a certain day, I would get my family out of here that day. Wouldn’t batten down the hatches on the house or anything, pretty unlikely it’s actually going to hit my house, but why take a chance and stay if I know it could be very bad?
