Hurricane Irma
You guys ready for another one? Hopefully ends up going to sea, but current super long tracks have it potentially hitting NC. In 1 day has spun up to a Cat 2 in the Atlantic. Still very far away.

gHost, you have been officially notified of the possibility of a potentially impending storm which may or may not impact the US.

UPDATE: Is now a Cat 4 with lots of warm water around it. Tracking southward, and models have it heading towards the US.

The Leeward Islands are just a brutal place to live this time of year.InTenSity wrote:UPDATE: Is now a Cat 4 with lots of warm water around it. Tracking southward, and models have it heading towards the US.

Yup, people would be better off staying at Montgomery Ward Islands.

Twife watched the grandaughter today, we decided she was more a hurricane than a tornado.

This is not looking good for South Florida at the moment. Still lots of time and a lot of ways it can go, but the concern is kicking up. Would probably hit next Saturday, which would suck for my ability to watch the Western game.

How much does flood insurance cost where you live? I know it's necessary, but I would imagine it's quite expensive.

My folks are in Ft Myers and it looked like there's a good chance they take a direct hit, too, just will depend on when it starts to hook.InTenSity wrote:Maybe I'll go to Naples.MiamiSpartan wrote:This is not looking good for South Florida at the moment. Re: Hurricane Irma
Naples may not be safe. If its coming up from the South, the whole state could be threatened depending on little movements. But I guess we will have a better idea in a few days.
I doubt we would leave if its a Cat 3 or less. Cat 4 or 5 would require some thought. Our house handled a high Cat 2 (Wilma) without shutters, and now we have shutters, so In the house should be good. But you never knnow about random shit with falling or flying trees.

I just saw the track. There might not be anywhere to go. I can't go anyway. Wife is considered a first responder, but I believe the hospital would put us up. I wonder what home depot is like today. I need some wing nuts.

Good question. It's part of our homeowners, but my wife knows the details. I should know it better, but my brain is too occupied by random sporting event memories from 20+ years ago.Dendrobates wrote:MiamiSpartan wrote:This is not looking good for South Florida at the moment. We aren't in the most flood prone area, and in 17 years have never been close to our house flooding...which, of course thousands of people in Houston could have said a month ago. But Irma, whatever happens, looks to be more of a disastrous wind event than a disastrous flood event, not that that is necessarily better.

Not a lot to board up on the entire island besides the bars and a few places to stay, plus the small businesses for the 300 or so who live there year-round. It's flat, and storms just blow past. Anegada did have the most amazing white beaches I've ever sunk my feet into. The sand is like flour.

Better make sure and stock up on milk and bread, or is that just for snowstorms?

The madness has begun. Most places are out of water. People freaking out, as if the stores won't get truckloads every day this week.

Go to Wyoming and Roc will introduce you to the 14 women that live there...and take you to a methlab at a rodeo.

Was just out and saw big lines at gas stations, like 3-5 cars deep waiting. If it comes it won't be until Saturday or later. Are you people not going to leave your house all week? Weird. Hell, maybe they all work really close and don't use 1/2 a tank or more per week like most people around here.

Filling up their gas cans for their lawn equipment. Nobody wants to have a shitty looking lawn when a hurricane makes landfall.

Re: Hurricane Irma
Thought we'd go to Costco this morning for some water, considering they were closed yesterday so the panic wouldn't have emptied their shelves. Got there around 9:25, figuring there would be a little line before they open at 10. Little line? It was wrapped 2/3 of the way around the building. Madness. Worst case, I bring a 5 gallon jug home from work.
My BIL said every place is sold out of propane, too. Gas station lines are madness, too.
I've seen several pre-storm panics, most of which ended up missing us, but I've never seen anything like this so early. It feels like 1-2 days before a storm, not 5. It's the Harvey effect. If it makes more people get prepared, that's good, though.

Mob mentality. If people perceive there will be a shortage, or prices will go up...they're going to get gas now.

Good luck dudes. If you want to flee to MI we'll find a place to put you up. It might be a pit in Travis' basement but at least it will be safe from Irma.
