Orlando area is the same. Went to Daytona Beach for HS spring break senior year. Bunch of us took a day trip to Disney World. Forget what freeway we got off of that had signs for DW. Seemed like we drove through many miles of pretty much desolation with only a couple gas stations until getting there. Haven't been back to that area since. Certain I wouldn't recognize anything now.Floyd Robertson wrote:What a difference 50 years makes.

No way was Disney World open when you were a senior in HS. It's only celebrating 50 years this year.

There's a very short bridge connecting Sanibel to Captiva Island. Wondering if that's gone too ?

It's already being reported that hundreds of people are dead. That number will probably sky rocket in the next few days and I can't imagine a worse way to die.
To be fair, I believe the Sheriff of Lee County speculated that they could have that many, so not really reported like it is confirmed or a starting point.
It is certainly possible though. There are thousands of mobile homes just across the bridges from Sanibel and Ft Myers Beach (so still just off the water ways meaning massive storm surge). Aerial footage of that area showed mobile homes on their side, upside down, jammed up against others. I saw another video (I think from more inland in Ft Myers), of one mobile home getting shredded in an instant, almost like it had exploded (but no ball of fire).
If many people stayed in those, it will definitely increase the toll.
AP News wrote:At least six people were confirmed dead in Florida, including two who died Thursday afternoon when their car hydroplaned and overturned in a water-filled ditch in north Florida’s Putnam County, while three other people were reported killed in Cuba after the hurricane struck there on Tuesday.

Probably some clean-up/construction jobs available in Florida
Maybe DeSantis could send a plane somewhere to pick some people up.

Everything about using a condom for that makes sense, it should be unlubricated however.

"Hurricane Ian will forever change the real estate industry and city infrastructure. Insurers will go into bankruptcy, homeowners will be forced into delinquency and insurance will become less accessible in regions like Florida," he said.
Recovery is expected to be slow and difficult due to inflation, high interest rates, and labor and materials costs.

Agreed. I expect it will be higher, possibly quite a bit higher, onnacount of inflation.
Also noticed how much less there will be in coverage due to storm surges.
Maybe our Florida Swillers can explain if that’s because people couldn’t get or couldn’t afford the additional coverage, or if most folks with water damage are going to be surprised and pissed that their flooded homes aren’t covered?

Lenders require flood insurance if you're in a flood zone.

So if no company offers flood insurance for certain areas, is that when the feds step in to offer some? I vaguely recall there being a federal program for that.

There is an insurer "sponsored" by the state of Florida.

I guess driving over to the west side tonight the wife and I were struck by how many animals were left behind in peoples places. I’m not judging but listening to some stories on cnn I guess it struck me that the first thing out the door with me is my cat carrier. I have no right to judge. Who knows how they had to leave and how horrible they felt leaving pets behind.

As I understand it, they are backed by the state of Florida. So no bankruptcy.

Correct, they are backed by the state disaster fund or something like that. Citizens can't really deny coverage, and they can't pack up and leave the state like so many have done. Having said that, Citizens is also supposedly just as easy to deal with as you would expect a government agency (or government backed agency) to be.

State funded. It is a non-profit insurer created by the Florida state legislature. I don't know if the Federal government gives them anything. The Pantry wrote:So, it's federally funded?Heat Miser wrote:

Edit: Actually state funded sounds like everyone's taxes pay it. Obviously, there are still all of the insurance premiums that customers pay. Like any other insurer, they run on that. But I believe the state backing comes in if they simply can't cover it. FWIW, Citizens just passed 1 million customers. There are 10 million residences in the state. So most don't have it.

If it’s Citizen’s Insurance then it’s been around a long time and is not a not-for-profit company. I’ve had Citizen’s for home and auto for decades. IIRC, before being bought up it was a Michigan company, or at least its corporate HQ was in Howell.

How do they do it without a state income tax? 6% sales tax is same as Michigan. Know there's a massive tourism difference. How do property taxes work there?MiamiSpartan wrote:State funded.
