The last time Battle Creek Central had a Big Ten-level prospect, it was running back Larry Caper, who signed with Michigan State. Former Bearcat Rashad Anthony White also signed with Michigan State after heading to a junior college first.

BCC now has another bona fide big-timer in linebacker Brandon Randle, and in attempt to have lightning strike a third time at the school, the Spartans offered Randle, a 6-foot-2, 215-pound junior, last weekend. That is his sixth offer overall, but first from a Big Ten or Power Five conference school -- but it might not be his last given the talent he showed a year ago.

Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio extended a scholarship offer to defensive tackle recruit Jovan Swann of Center Grove High School in Greenwood, Ind. on Tuesday. The 6-foot-3, 255-pound prospect came to East Lansing with offers from Boston College, Iowa, Mississippi State, Illinois and Vanderbilt among others. He is rated the #4 prospect in Indiana for the class of 2016 and the #34 defensive tackle in the nation.

"Yes I was extended an offer from coach Dantonio to attend Michigan State," Swann said. "The visit was great from a football perspective. I liked the way the tempo was set by coach Dantonio and the unique coaching style and structure by defensive line coach Ron Burton. The academic meeting I had with the director there stood out to me too. They broke down everything they have to offer just from an academic standpoint."

Scrap the program. Getting beat by Yale on the recruiting trail.

Equally effective is recruiting players directly from high school. Recently, Reno has succeeded in attracting highly-ranked recruits away from the Big Ten, Pac-12, Southeastern Conference and other top-tier NCAA Division I leagues. Players such as current commit Daniel James, Jon Bezney ’18, Mason Friedline ’17 and Victor Egu ’17 turned down schools ranging from Vanderbilt, Notre Dame and Wisconsin to UC Berkeley, Oregon and Michigan State in favor of Yale.

If DeSales sounds familiar to Spartans fans, there is a good reason. Back in 2010, MSU signed Travis Jackson from there. Jackson served as team captain and was a four-time Academic All-Big Ten selection. DeSales is known for producing quality student-athletes.

Andrews plans on returning to East Lansing for the Green and White game on April 25. He will head to Wisconsin this weekend and also plans on attending the Ohio State spring game on April 18.

Spring game could be big for recruits

The Spartans are expected to host a large contingent of recruits on campus for the Green and White game, including a handful of players the staff has offered for the class of 2016. It is very possible that the Spartans could pick up a commitment or two on that day as several players have indicated they are closing in on a decision.

Will there be another Rison catching touchdowns in Spartan Stadium? That just might come to fruition as Michigan State offered Hunter Rison, the son of former Spartan great Andre Rison, on Thursday. MSU is the first school to extend a scholarship offer to the 6-foot-0, 185-pound Ann Arbor Skyline sophomore.

"It was almost dream-like, to be honest," Rison said. "You grow up, dad's alma mater is Michigan State, you love football, that's what you want to do, you see the green and white, and to have the first offer from Michigan State, I had to sit back and think about it for a second and pinch myself."

Update on deWeaver from a UK site.

Kentucky is still in the mix for four-star Messiah deWeaver but his Crystal Ball is heavy to Michigan State. They were the leader for deWeaver earlier in the cycle before throwing the kitchen sink at Kendall and it may be too late to make up that ground. The Cats do have former teammate Kei Beckham and current teammates Tobias Gilliam and Roland Walder in deWeavers ear and he recently has made a point to say that Kentucky is in the mix despite what the connections to Sparty. At this point MSU seems to be the pick with Kentucky running second as a dark horse.

Surprised we've waited so long to offer, given how much Coach D prioritizes special teams play. Bet it's an uphill battle, given how many schools have already offered, particularly Michigan.

EAST LANSING -- Rockford's Quinn Nordin, rated No. 1 kicker prospect in the nation, indicated he's planning on attending Michigan State's annual Green-White game on April 25.

Nordin, in a direct message exchange from his Twitter account to "The Griff and Grinz" show on Lansing's 92.1 FM on Wednesday, said he's visiting the University of Michigan today and has visits set up to Pittsburgh on Friday and Penn State on Saturday.

One of the offensive line prospects Michigan State has been actively recruiting the past year is Gavin Cupp of Leipsic, Ohio. On Tuesday, the Spartans extended a scholarship offer to the 6-foot-6, 275-pound prospect.

The Spartans' staff is focused on several Midwest offensive line prospects, and the offer to Cupp puts him on the short list of recruits the staff is actively pursuing. Rivals.com rates Cupp as a three-star prospect and the No. 28 tackle in the nation for the class of 2016. He is rated the No. 12 player in talent-rich Ohio.
