MSU pursuing a 2016 CB prospect from Ohio.

One of the top prospects in Ohio for the class of 2016 is cornerback Austin Andrews of Columbus St. Francis de Sales. Andrews is ranked as a three-star recruit and the No. 52 cornerback in the nation by rivals.com. He is the No. 25 player in talent-laden Ohio.

Andrews holds a dozen scholarship offers, including from Missouri, Iowa, Indiana and Purdue.

Michigan State's reputation for developing NFL-level defensive backs is well-known. The Spartans are looking to add a few high-level prospects in 2016 who can carry on the impressive tradition.

"I am hearing from them," Andrews said of MSU. "I have not been up there in a little while. I was up there for a game, and it is a beautiful place. Coach (Mike) Tressel is my recruiter. I called up there about a week ago, just to keep in touch."

More on 2016 offer Chris Evans

One of the players the Michigan State staff is looking to add for the class of 2016 is running back Chris Evans of Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis. The 6-foot-0, 190-pound Evans is rated a 3-star recruit and the #5 prospect in Indiana for the class of 2016 by Rivals.com. In addition to MSU, he also has BCS scholarship offers from Illinois, Indiana and Cincinnati.

http://www.freep.com/story/sports/college/michigan-state/spartans/2015/03/12/chris-evans-ben-davis-high-school/70254254/

MLive's Mike Griffith talks about the 2016 class and positions of need.

Blackwell, appearing on Thursday's "Griff and Grinz Show" on Lansing's 92.1 FM, The Team, said needs dictate that MSU will be looking for more receivers and linemen, specifically, as well as defensive backs.
"We want some big linemen, and then receivers are obviously a big need, we lose five receivers,'' he said, "and we want some defensive backs. But offensive linemen, defensive linemen and receivers are our biggest areas of need.''

Michigan State pursuing 2016 RB from Indiana.

It is a good year for talent in the state of Indiana and one of the reasons why is Toks Akinribade of Brownsburg High School. The 6-foot, 205-pound Akinribade is rated the No. 6 player in the Hoosier State and the No. 61 athlete prospect in the nation for the class of 2016 by Rivals.com. He already holds BCS scholarships from Boston College, Cincinnati, Indiana, Illinois and Iowa as well as having a host of MAC scholarships.

Akinribade visited Michigan State back in December and the Spartans have kept in contact with him throughout the process.

Interesting 2016 prospect from Detroit Renaissance. 6'7 285lbs OT Alaric Jackson recently picked up an offer from MSU. He has only played a single year of football in high school.

Basketball is king right now with March Madness and the state tournament in full swing, but it is no longer the primary focus for Alaric Jackson. A 6-foot-7, 285-pound junior from Detroit Renaissance, Jackson played basketball and only basketball his first two high school years. He still does, starring for the Phoenix this season, but it is football where he has now truly made his mark.

With his size and the athleticism hoops has helped him with, Jackson is a prototypical left tackle prospect, which is why, even despite his relative inexperience, colleges from across the country have come calling, including Michigan State, who offered him a scholarship recently.

EAST LANSING -- Quarterback prospect Messiah deWeaver told MLive.com on Tuesday that he's planning an unofficial visit Michigan State this weekend.

The four-star prospect (Rivals.com) from Wayne High School in Dayton's Huber Heights school district said he has 15 scholarship offers, and he hears from recruiters by phone or through social media channels most every day.

"It's a lot of people coming at you,'' said deWeaver, who started and played his first three years of high school at Trotwood-Madison. "It's kind of an every day thing.''

A former Michigan commitment, deWeaver said the Spartans and Wolverines approach recruiting in both similar and different ways.

"Michigan State, they've been there forever talking to me, Coach (Harlon) Barnett was my recruiter, really started my recruiting, and it took off,'' deWeaver said. "Coach (Mark) Dantonio is a more a laid-back guy, he's a business guy, he's not a big talker, but he does get his point across. He's not a rah rah guy.

"Michigan is more outgoing, they try to brand the school. Michigan State is more about you as a person. They want to get to know the real you.''

That would be awesome if both committed this weekend. Nab our QB and our WR class would be pretty well set (though I'd really like to add Corley, too).

http://www.detroitnews.com/story/sports/college/michigan-state-university/2015/03/26/trieu-msu-enters-wide-open-chase-for-huge-de-prince-sammons/70503540/

Michigan State has offered one of the top prospects in Ohio and the nation, Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy junior Prince Sammons, a nearly 6-foot-7, 280-pound defensive end and offensive tackle who is being recruited by the country's powers.

Area recruiter Harlon Barnett and head coach Mark Dantonio broke the news to Sammons and his head coach, Eric Taylor.

"Coach Dantonio is a great guy and I always enjoy talking with him when he comes to town," Prince's father, Brandon Sammons, told Scout's Dave Berk. "So he's definitely a fun guy to talk with. Michigan State is definitely one of the better programs around with its consistency and model of success."

A native of Nigeria, Sammons is newer to the game of football than most top recruits.

"As a player, he's raw, but physically, he's a manchild," Berk says. "He's a legit 6-foot-7, 280 pounds, but still learning to be an athlete and a football player. He's only played two years and never knew what the game was before that. He can play on either side of the ball. Where he might have the highest ceiling is as an offensive tackle, but 70 percent of the teams recruiting him are as a defensive end because his length is hard to find."

His lack of experience in football also leads to a lack of experience with the who's-who of college football. Even though he has pulled in offers from programs like Alabama, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Auburn, and now the Spartans, because he did not grow up with an affinity for any schools or watching college football, Sammons is still wide open.

Apparently someone flipped a crystal ball for George Hill (4-star OSU RB commit) to MSU. I highly doubt we get him, but it'd be a pretty big coup to flip him from Meyer.

Dorsey's article on this weekend

These are just a few of the players expect on campus. The Spartans could have close to 20 recruits on campus in all. While none of the players have stated publicly that they could make a decision this weekend, it would not be a surprise if Michigan State received a commitment from one or more of the players listed above.

It would be nice to get our QB and really get this class rolling, but I'd love a commitment from Layne. He's a top-10 player in Ohio and has an OSU offer. Stealing him from Urbz would be awesome and would guarantee that we have two elite WRs in this class (and hopefully 3 with Corley committing later). Lot of room for early playing time with the WRs we're losing after this year.

MICHIGAN STATE

The Spartans were yet another Big Ten program with a lot of traffic on campus, including Georgia prospects Isaiah Pryor, Russell Halimon, Korey Banks and Jamyest Williams.

Their time spent with the coaching staff was memorable, especially for Williams, who is a defensive back.

"I was just thinking while Coach [Mark] Dantonio was talking, that he can turn two stars into first-round draft picks, imagine when he gets a four-star athlete and what he could do for me," he said.

Michigan State also had ESPN Jr. 300 receiver Justin Layne in for a visit, and Layne tweeted about his time with the coaches.

Layne got a chance to hang out with ESPN Jr. 300 quarterback Messiah DeWeaver, who took a return trip to see Michigan State. DeWeaver will be deciding at the end of April, so this could be an important visit for Michigan State in that race.

"I was there for a couple days," he said. "I saw the ins and outs of practice and had a great time with the coaches and players."

South Carolina was also well represented in East Lansing with Nick McCloud, Josh Wilkes, Greg Ruff, Quay Brown, Jamari Curren and a few others taking the trip.

With all the good news in basketball, what about some football recruiting updates...

2016 offer Auston Robertson won Defensive MVP at the Adidas Top 10 Showcase.

Robertson again showed his considerable upside. He had one of the better showings we've seen him have in the one-on-ones, and as usual, he gave cornerback a try and impressed observers with his ability to run with receivers at his size. Still not a finished product, he continues to go out, compete, and improve. Currently Michigan State stands as the team to beat for him with Notre Dame gaining ground and visits remaining to Nebraska, Ohio State, and possibly Alabama and Penn State, which could change the face of his recruitment. He decides in June.

Michigan State's Final Four basketball run provides exposure and boost to Spartans' football recruiting

Curtis Blackwell, Michigan State's director of college advancement and performance, said that not only was Dantonio pleased for his friend, but the football coach recognized the boost Izzo's basketball team has given football recruiting.

"When I was looking at social media, I saw many individuals talking about our basketball program and our great school,'' Blackwell said. "Whenever you get a chance to show the world that Michigan State is having success in this competitive landscape, it helps you get even more brand recognition.

"So you've got a football team with a top-five finish, and now a basketball team in the Final Four, and there aren't any other programs that can say that.''

Michigan State is the only program that can boast winning four straight bowl games in the same years as advancing to four consecutive Sweet 16s.

MSU seems to be making inroads with 2016 offer Justin Layne, a four star WR prospect with an impressive list of offers.

The top receiver in the 2016 class from Ohio isn't sure where he'll ultimately catch on and play his college football, but Cleveland's Justin Layne feels Michigan State is worth another look this weekend.

"This will be my fourth time up,'' said Layne, a Benedictine High School product who's bringing his mother on this trip up to East Lansing. "I'm really wanting to see how they practice.''

Messiah deWeaver, widely regarded as Ohio's best 2016 quarterback, already is at MSU for Friday and Saturday unofficial visit activities.

Layne has a long, impressive list of scholarship offers -- Alabama, Ohio State and Florida among the most notable -- but he's not looking to impress anyone with his school of choice or necessarily please the masses.

Michigan State hosted an impressive group of recruits on campus last weekend. One of the players in attendance was Battle Creek Central linebacker Brandon Randle. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Randle got some good news while he was in East Lansing when MSU coach Mark Dantonio offered him a scholarship.

"Getting a scholarship to attend Michigan State University was breathtaking because of my family background in the program and it was unexpected as well," Randle said.

Randle had just a few MAC scholarship offers, though the Spartans have kept in regular contact with him throughout the process. MSU had Randle on campus in the fall for MSU's Senior Day Game against Rutgers.

"I absolutely love the Spartans," Randle said. "All of my family is big on Michigan State. My mother ran track at Michigan State so I have Sparty Blood."

He was just at State last weekend. The guy is one of Ohio's best players and has an OSU offer. He would be a steal for us.

You'll miss tRCMB membership falling over itself to kiss his ass.

He wrote an article on Tum and Clark, the response would make you think he'd written The Brothers Karamazov.

Football recruits rooting for MSU on twitter...........

Khalid Kareem and KJ Hamler, two of the most sought-after high school prospects in the Great Lakes State, were taking unofficial visits in East Lansing while the Spartans' men's basketball team was making headlines at press conferences in Indianapolis on Thursday.

It was just two days ago that Michigan State coach Tom Izzo was saying how he hoped the basketball team's success reaching the Final Four could have some carryover into other Spartan athletic programs.

"To keep the department healthy, to grow a university, like (former MSU president) John Hannah wanted it grown, where athletics was a front porch,'' Izzo said on Tuesday at Spartan Stadium. "I just am a believer that as big a basketball fan as I am, you need football.
