LooseGoose wrote:EAST LANSING — Michigan State's newest verbal commit has obviously yet to suit up for Mark Dantonio and the Spartans, but already, Kenney Lyke is speaking the same language as his future head coach.
"Michigan State football is hard-nosed, and they fight for everything that they get, and it's hard work,'' said Lyke, a safety from Palatine, Illinois, who announced on Friday he has chosen MSU over Notre Dame and Baylor. "They fight for almost everything they go through. They haven't got anything just handed to them, they have to work for it.
"That's why a lot of rough guys go to Michigan State, (guys) who are hungry and trying to be relevant.''

Interesting blurb from an MGoBlow thread...
As for MSU they have two top 100 targets (King, Robertson) everyone thinks are going to fall for them in the first week of June to go along with their other 4s. Corley is a top 150 player and dude is walking around Midwest camps dressed in Spartan crap from top to bottom.

2016 Team Recruiting Ranking
This site presents a unique approach to rating and ranking high school athletes. Major recruiting services rank these athletes based upon the opinions of their experts. In contrast, the offer-based approach represents the perceptions of college coaches by quantifying the scholarship offers they’ve extended to each athlete.
The offer-based approach has the following advantages over opinion-based rankings:
More objective, with less opportunity for bias
Greater number of reviewers
Greater number of athletes are evaluated
College coaches are more qualified to evaluate potential for college success
College coaches have “skin in the game”
Rankings can be made earlier in the recruiting process
Offer-based recruit rankings measure something slightly different than the traditional player rankings produced by recruiting services. The services’ analysts evaluate players almost solely upon how well they play their particular sport and position. College coaches must take much more into consideration. Academic ability and character, for example, are traits a college coach must consider before extending an offer to a prospect. Instead of being just a ranking of a prospect’s athletic ability, offer-based rankings are also a measure of how likely a prospect is to be successful as a college student-athlete.

lol, had it copied to send to my son. He's looking for some rentals to buy and there are two on that property for $36K. Condition didn't look bad and only a block or so off Houghton Lake it seemed like a deal worth investigating.

The good news is this class is curently ranked #8. The bad news is that it is ranked #35 in average star rating at 3.15.
Unfortunately, as far as rankings are concerned this appears to be a situation of quanity over quality. We are going to need a run of 4 stars combined with a few star bumps to even approach the ever elusive monster class.
Contrast this with UM who is sitting on a lofty average star ranking of 3.67. With 8 months to go they will at worst complete their class with 3 star "fillers" and catch MSU in the rankings.
Many of these guys are underrated. Look at their offers. Nothing to see here.
Would like to see some star bumps and we will we get some other four stars. This class will be good just because of 22-25 kids coming in. But realy the last two classes we got were amazing.
We need to stop this croot bragging though and bragging so damn early

Re: tOfficial MSU Football Recruiting Thread: Class of 2016
Spring-time recruiting championships are new to the Michigan State world, but with 11 commitments from high-priority targets in the past month and a consensus top-10 class ranking at this point, the Spartans are said to be winning.
The next question, then: Is someone else losing?
MSU’s history under Mark Dantonio suggests that no one has to be — the Spartans have never cleaned up like this before in his tenure and have typically finished with classes ranked nationally in the 30s, yet they have 53 wins in the past five years, consecutive top-5 finishes as a team and national title aspirations for 2015.
But after Palatine (Ill.) Fremd safety Kenney Lyke became MSU’s 13th verbal commitment for the class of 2016 on Friday, the Spartans have six pledges from prospects with Notre Dame offers, five with Michigan offers, four with Ohio State offers and two with Alabama offers.
The short answer is, don’t shed any tears for the Crimson Tide or the defending national champion Buckeyes, whose class is pushing for No. 1 right now.
“Ohio State is turning away great players,” said Steve Wiltfong, national analyst for 247Sports.com. “Still, I bet Ohio State is looking at that Michigan State class and saying, ‘Damn, that’s a good class.’ ”

MSU beating rivals for recruits
In my opinion, it's not teams like Ohio State, or even Michigan that's losing...they'll get theirs. It's the non-bluebloods. There's only so much talent to go around, and at the worst, the bluebloods will get guys they want that are lesser-rated that didn't have their attention before higher-rated guys pick schools like MSU.
In particular, it's schools like Wisconsin and Iowa (in the B1G, since our recruiting success is Midwest-based).
When Dantonio got here, we had trouble beating those schools out for recruits. Then we started beating them out, but still losing to the bluebloods, and now we're beginning to win some on our own.
All this time, as MSU has risen, we've been making it tougher for the other schools in the conference to upgrade their talent base, at least with Midwestern recruits. Iowa used to be the model program for Dantonio...now we've lapped them. Wisconsin was a program that seemed to be our equal and biggest nemesis and the team that would rise up with MSU to challenge OSU...they're a clear step behind us now.
As we've continued to do better in recruiting, we've kind of been passing the programs that were ahead/with us in the B1G's middle class. Sure, it doesn't matter quite as much if you can develop talent and recruit for your system well (which MSU continues to do), but I definitely think MSU's rise has come at the expense of other programs to a degree as there's only so much talent in the Midwest to go around.

MSU battling ND on and off the field.
Yet no team in the country may be on a hotter recruiting streak than coach Mark Dantonio’s. The Spartans are grabbing early verbal commitments from all over the Midwest and beating out strong competition.
The latest commitment came Friday, when three-star safety Kenney Lyke chose Michigan State over Notre Dame, Baylor and Oregon. Lyke, from Palatine (Ill.) Fremd High, was the 10th commitment for the Spartans in the past five weeks, and likely won’t be the last prospect to pick Michigan State over Notre Dame.
Four-star defensive ends Josh King and Auston Robertson are set to make commitments in early June. Both have Notre Dame as one of their top schools, but many expect Michigan State to be their ultimate destination. Robertson said Friday he plans to be visit Notre Dame next week.

Re: tOfficial MSU Football Recruiting Thread: Class of 2016
Pretty solid projection for our roster going forward......it's worrisome that we seem to run out of Bulloughs after 2018, though we should have an Allen on the OL until 2020.
Michigan State Spartans Football: Introducing the Projected Roster
Over the last five weeks, MSU has landed eleven verbal football commits for the 2016 class. I wasn't a math major (shocking, right?), but it does seem to me that averaging 2.2 commits per week is an unsustainable trend. Due to low levels of attrition, MSU recruiting classes have been relatively small; the largest were classes of 23 in 2007 and 2009. Comparatively, Ohio State took 28 guys in the 2014 class and 27 guys in the 2015 class. But just how large could the 2016 class be for MSU?
There is really only one way to answer that, which is by counting up all the scholarship players MSU has on the roster. We do this for basketball, but it is much easier to keep track of 13 scholarship players instead of 85. In fact, I needed help from you guys to get there (Thanks Green 96!). Unfortunately, the chart is too big to copy and paste as an image, so here is the Google spreadsheet where I'll be tracking the roster.
Caveats: I only included scholarship guys, with the exceptions of AJ Troup and Cole Chewins, who will be going on scholarship for next season, presumably. I ordered the depth chart first by class (to make counting easier) and then loosely by location on the depth chart. I assumed a redshirt year for all guys in the 2015 and 2016 classes (this is probably not true for somebody like LJ Scott). For the 2015 class, I put them at the position suggested by the official MSU page; for the 2016 class I generally kind of guessed. The 2016 guys especially may not be correct. Some thoughts:

Little blurb in here on DeWeaver:
Best of RCS: Quarterbacks
The Skinny: Having watched deWeaver's development over the last few years, the 6-foot-4, 215-pound passer has really improved his arm mechanics and now has very few flaws. He does not have the biggest arm around, but he puts enough velocity on his throws and excels with accuracy, decision-making and intangibles.

Verbal commitments in college football recruiting mean little these days, as programs continue to pursue prospects after they’ve pledged elsewhere. Such is the case with 2017 running back Todd Sibley, who committed to Ohio State last month but says he’s still hearing plenty from three big-time programs.

Re: tOfficial MSU Football Recruiting Thread: Class of 2016
Writers consistently struggle with "reins" and "reigns"......please excuse that here.
Michigan State could see more recruiting success in near future
How this class is shaping up: Michigan State has the two big receivers and they also have four-star offensive lineman Thiyo Lukusa committed. Quarterback Messiah DeWeaver has taken the reigns to try to recruit for the Spartans and has help from running back Abdul Adams, defensive backs Demetric Vance, Austin Andrews and Kenney Lyke as well as a few others.
What they need to do next: Michigan State has a few big targets committing in the next few weeks with defensive linemen Naquan Jones, Josh King and Auston Robertson all announcing in early June. All three could end up in East Lansing and would help push this class even further up the rankings for Michigan State. Landing those three would be a huge deal for good publicity and making other prospects notice what's going on with the Spartans recruiting. Having those big name recruits on board will also mean extra recruiters, which is really all Michigan State needs at this point.
