It’s the classic “Republican dog chasing abortion car” for decades. Well, they finally caught it.
Now what?

Yes, you are right.
However, the elections which really have been landslides seem to combine the access for abortion with a general access for fair elections and representation such as voting rights, here in the 2022 Michigan election or a promise of less partisan gerrymandering as in the Wisconsin election.

I would hope it doesn't come down to that, but it probably will. If it brings out the younger vote, then good.
I saw a comment the other day. The only reason republicans are against abortion is because it insures a steady stream of less educated workers to be exploited.

instead of expanding their platform to possibly include an evolving American demographic, the GOP made the short-term decision to outrage their current base via silly, manufactured culture war issues.AvgMSUJoe wrote:Shocking that the idiot Rs weren't all in on the "just rile up the base" scam vs. Actually doing something and facing repercussions.

it might work in certain pockets of the United States, especially in the gerrymandered ones, but it's not a winning formula nationally.
In fact, in the last handful of elections, the only thing that has kept an incompetent Democrat party experiencing marginal levels of success is the absolute inability of the GOP to connect with anyone beyond their knuckle-scraping base.
if the Democrats on the national level could ever get their stuff together, it would be a great day for America. Just look at what happened in Michigan in 2022.

They did the one thing that ensured they lose control of the issue and thus the messaging and elections. Once you bring in a partisan into the court, all it takes is some crazy organization filing a lawsuit to usurp republican authority and influence. Remember: quite literally EVERYONE was warning Republicans and Trump how what they were doing was deleterious to our country. Now the inmates rule the asylum. Mitch mconnel has to be pretty pissed. He had pretty much perfected the art of complaining, gain power, and then do nothing of consequence. But they went a step too far and of course now we have to worry about a national ban from these zealots so they ensured Democrat engagement.

Is this partly because of the Democratic Party changing the date of the primary?

The new primary date in late February conflicts with an RNC mandate that a state can't hold an open primary prior to March 1st without penalty of losing delegates at the national convention or something like that.

So the Michigan Republicans are caught between a rock and a hard place, just like the Michigan Democratics were in 2008. Sucks to be them, I guess.

Ms. Feinstein, an 89-year-old California Democrat, has been away from the Senate since February, when she was diagnosed with the infection. Her absence has become a problem for Senate Democrats, limiting their ability to move forward with judicial nominations. In recent days, as it became clear she was not planning to return after a two-week recess, pressure began to increase for Ms. Feinstein to resign.
On Wednesday night, she said she would not do so, but offered a stopgap solution, saying she would request a temporary replacement on the panel.

That's just silly. We need a mandatory retirement age for the House and Senate.

Re: The 2024 US House & Senate (& Presidential Election) and the Michigan Legislature - Who do you Think Wins?
Her argument is U.S. President Joe Biden, who has formally launched his campaign for a second term and is heavily favored to win the nomination, isn’t interested in alleviating economic injustice and reversing the creeping corporate control of the country.
Re: The 2024 US House & Senate (& Presidential Election) and the Michigan Legislature - Who do you Think Wins?
At least four Republicans — former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, right-wing talk radio host Larry Elder, and conservative activist Vivek Ramaswamy — are already challenging Trump, while two more, South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott and former Vice President Mike Pence, are preparing to. And Trump’s disruptive energy will offer Biden another chance to contrast his message with one of Republican chaos. But for that to work, the American people need to know his record.

Republicans fear they are on the brink of ceasing to be viable as a party in the state of Michigan following a series of leadership controversies and bad publicity, reported The Hill on Wednesday.
"The state party is facing a slew of negative headlines painting a picture of warring factions in dire financial straits. Last week, reports surfaced that an alleged fight broke out between allies of the party’s new chair, Kristina Karamo, and her former opponent for the position, Matthew DePerno," the report said.
"On top of that, Karamo has faced criticism of her own from both inside and outside the GOP for a number of remarks, including for comparing gun control restrictions to the treatment of Jewish people during the Holocaust."

Sen. Mitch McConnell and Biden are roughly the same age. Three other senators are older. The average age of members of the Senate is 67 years. When Sen. Robert Byrd died he was in his ninth term in office and was 92. If Biden is reelected and serves his full second term, he would still leave office younger than two current members of the Senate. Chuck Grassley, just reelected last year at age 89, will be 96 when his current term expires.

The interesting thing about that article is that the most Presidents since Roosevelt have had a wide variety of health problems. The senator age angle was a bonus.

Knowledge & competence doesn't really have a sell by date, other than death. If it is obvious that a elected official is no longer capable the voters can deal with that.
