A suburban Detroit trophy hunter who spent $400,000 to hunt a rare black rhinoceros in Africa is receiving permission to import the animal’s skin, skull, and horns to Michigan.

The Trump administration is granting approval to Chris D. Peyerk, a Shelby Township resident who applied in April for a permit from the federal Fish and Wildlife Service, The Associated Press first reported.

Peyerk is the president of Michigan-based Dan’s Excavating Inc., a construction business that does a lot of road work for the state’s Department of Transportation.

To be fair, it's not at a zoo, it's at a national park. I can't speak for Namibia, but few, if any, of our national parks are at all enclosed, and most are pretty damn big in size. I would think that hunting in a national park is not really any different than hunting on any other piece of land, and wouldn't be like leading the animals to you on a leash (though again, I can't speak for Namibia, so for all I know that is exactly what they did).

As a disclaimer, I have never hunted a day in my life. I do support hunting for some of the reasons you mentioned above (and the very tasty venison when it comes to deer hunting), though I hate trophy hunting for the sake of just the trophy.

It’s not like those guides had to scour the entire park in search of a target. They know the exact area to cover in order to find their prey. Whale watches don’t skim the Pacific coastline from Vancouver to the Baja Peninsula. Experienced locals have very good ideas of the times and places where pods can be found. It’s not much different than DWags grabbing his pole and sticking his worm in his favorite fishing hole.

Is that really any different than going to someone's personal property to hunt, which is fairly common in Michigan and elsewhere?  They know the land like the back of their hand, know the animals habits, bait areas for them, etc.  Or any different than fishing in a pond or lake that you've fished on for decades and know all the good spots?

Quite a bit. I've hunted my fair share on other people's private property. You basically go out in their woods and hope for a deer or pheasant or whatever you're hunting to wander by. I've never had the owner guide me to shit.

I meant if they take you hunting, not if someone just sets you loose on your own on their property. Again, I've never hunted, but people that I knew that did, and owned property, would invite people to go hunting on their property with them. I don't think they let the newbies lead them, when they knew where their baits were set up, where the deer usually went, etc.
