Tomatoes. I know I’m supposed to prune the smaller bottom branches. But is that a thing I do now, throughout the whole life of the plant or only later when it starts producing fruit?

I never do this but I believe people do it as soon as they appear.
F woodchucks, they have a den dug again this year basically since noon today. Mowed my lettuce right down

From what I understand, you don’t need to, but they are called suckers because they suck water/energy from the plant/fruit.

Squash plant is pretty strong, so it's okay, as well. Cucumbers are hanging in there. One pepper plant is on it's last legs it looks like, but we'll see.
otherwise, the perennials, ornamental grasses and annuals are okay. The last few years, I've gotten away from a ton of annuals. We just mainly keep a few pots filled in the front and on the back deck. Otherwise, the estate is bedazzled with grasses, daylillies, rudbeckia, purple cone flowers, etc.
Happy Gardening, brosephs (and Dendro).

I did for awhile at first but then I got confused as to which ones I was to keep and which ones to get rid of.Nordic wrote:Travis of the Cosmos wrote:Hey dudes

Tomatoes seems to be doing well, except one plant that I think has a disease (all of the fruit has a brown spot at the bottom). Got several zucchini on the way, cucumbers are flowering a bunch but I haven’t seen any fruit yet. Should have several eggplant, I think one was starting when I looked yesterday. I planted unwisely and the peppers are getting crowded out, have a couple of jalapeños but I don’t know that I’ll get much more than that.
Potted herbs are all happy, and I potted a bunch of radishes that should be ready in a week or so. Then I’ll put down a bunch more radishes. Big radish guy.

Get some calcium fertilizer for your tomatoes. End rot it sounds like

What I do is let three full vines grow (main original vine then the two earliest suckers). Any suckers beyond those three vines I let set one cluster of blossoms and then pinch it off at the next leaf set.

Same. I wouldn't stress over it. If is is angling down, snip it. If unsure, leave it. FWIW I stopped growing tomatoes because A) they are disgusting (wife likes them) B) they are water hogs. I only do lettuce variants and spinach. Simple and easy.

our tomatoes, though, are a bit stunted. Lots on the vine, but they're not ripening quickly at all. Not sure what's up with that.
otherwise, the ornamental plants are doing well. Rudbeckia in full bloom, miscanthis grasses are fully developed, matured.

Summer squash?
Would think it is pretty early for Acorn & Butternut.

Same thing, different name.

yeah, I prefer 'crookneck squash', 'cause it sounds like something my toothless, 3rd grade educated, Appalachia grandmother would've said.Trapper Gus wrote:Robert J Sakimano wrote: crookneck squash.

Our "summer squash" has been producing for about 3 weeks or so. Lots of squash, onions & bacon dinners.

our cherry tomatoes and cucumbers have been at a high yield. Lots of cherry tomato/cucumber salads (basically, half the tomatoes, dice up up the cuke.. a drizzle of olive oil, salt).
a summertime delight.
