My cell/texting are down, but WiFi is up. I found out that calls/texts can be sent with WiFi calling, so that gives us some communication.

The wind is starting to pick up in Atlanta. A little gusty at times.

I'm good. Cleaning up the pool and downed trees has helped some.

When does the storm surge typically hit and how long does it last? Is it clear in Miami yet?
Just wondering about my coworkers in Tampa.

I guess you missed the part of my post where I said that I've been texting and calling via WiFi.gHost Spartan wrote:That's because you don't have an iPhone. With iPhone you can text via WiFi. Yes, the storm surge in Miami is gone.WhiteBoyHatcher wrote:When does the storm surge typically hit and how long does it last? Is it clear in Miami yet?

When it starts depends on where the hurricane is relative to a city. The wind blows the storm surge, so it happens when the winds are coming from off share. With the counter clockwise winds, Miami got the storm surge while the center of the storm was to the Southwest. For the West coast, I would think they would have gotten it on the back side of the storm, but may have gotten some earlier being pushed up from the South.

Re: Hurricane Irma
Missed it earlier. Friend in Hernando Beach posted a map of his property location on FB around 8pm Saturday that included the center line of Irma's predicted path at the time. Center line was maybe 200' from his home. I'd post the map but it is too location specific.
He prepped the place and took his family to Orlando. They are fine but still not back to Hernando to survey the damage. Hoping it is minimal. They were lucky the thing turned inland and didn't follow up the coast like many feared, including me.

Wind seems to be dying down. Raining a little more though. Just got back from Publix. Wasn't very crowded.

Atlantans sound like they handle a rain storm about as well as they handle a dusting of snow.NigelUno wrote:Wind seems to be dying down. Raining a little more though. Just got back from Publix. Wasn't very crowded.

Re: Hurricane Irma
On MSNBC they showed the storm surge graph. It was rising about 2 ft an hour after the eye wall left Naples. Then about an hour later they were reveling about how the surge seemed to level off and we're hoping it stayed that way. These two dolts completely ignores the bottom part of the graph that showed low tide was starting. Lol. It was leveling because the tide was going out.

Our work was told that the facility is open, I guess they never really say that you have to go in or use PTO. My boss told me to work from home, since I have the kids and someone is coming out to take down the trees.

Publix closed at 7. We got there around 6. Any (normally) open refrigerated cases were covered in plastic...because the power went out earlier and they thought it might go out again. They pulled all the meat and must have put it in the freezer or something.
Not many people driving around. Schools were canceled and most businesses didn't open or closed early. Marta didn't operate today. It was still a tropical storm. Power went out for a lot of Fulton County.
Lady got killed in Forsyth County sitting in her driveway by a tree that fell on her.
Obviously not hurricane level damage, but city responded well (and early) by being proactive.

I'll take pictures of the after, once the trees are down. I'm going in tomorrow, but I do think it's b.s. They want people driving to work through streets that have downed trees and other issues, like most lights not working and curfews.

I just found out a co-worker's sister was arrested somewhere in FL last night at 8:15 for violating the 8PM curfew.
They're having a tough time getting in tough with anyone down there to bail her out.

All of my team members are safe. All report minor damage, like mostly to roofs and downed trees. Talked to one of my designers today. He said they live waaay inland, not near the bay at all, and he found a shrimp in his front yard. He also said there was no flooding in Tampa. I did see that a bunch of the water got sucked out of the Bay and people were out there walking in the dried up Bay.
My office is still technically closed. They said the building takes 24 hours to power up, no communications yet as to when it will be back online.

Re: Hurricane Irma
Glad your people are safe. FPL said they are concentrating on the east side of the state first, then moving west. They will probably be working in Tampa before that. Power is intermittent depending on where you are, and now with lights not working, they are imploring people to treat them as 4 way stops, but its still crazy at intersections.WhiteBoyHatcher wrote:All of my team members are safe. Heard some chain saws this morning. Lots of branches down. No major damage that I could see in the neighborhood. 2 people died in the Atlanta area.
Kind of misty out now.
